DEF(Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is a colorless solution of pure urea and demineralized water. It is designed to reduce hazardous nitrogen oxide gas (NOx) emissions from diesel vehicles and convert to them to non-hazardous gases, in line with the Governments goals to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.
DEF helps neutralize nitrogen oxides released by diesel vehicles.
Vehicles that have SCR technology have a separate tank filled with DEF. It is then released into the exhaust pipe just before the SCR catalyst. The heat in the exhaust causes it to decompose into ammonia(NH3) and carbon dioxide(CO2). The ammonia then reacts with the harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) to convert it to non-hazardous nitrogen and water, which are then released as steam.
Most recent diesel vehicles fitted with SCR catalytic converters require DEF. Also if there is a black or blue cap adjacent to your main fuel cap, then your vehicle requires DEF.
The amount of DEF depends on the type of vehicle in question. If you are using a car, a 10L refill should suffice. If you use a larger vehicle such as a truck it would be beneficial to purchase a larger volume of DEF.
If you run out of DEF when driving the engine performance is reduced to limit emissions. But once you have stopped you won't be able to restart the vehicle until the vehicle has the minimum quantity of DEF refilled.
Most vehicles indicate in some way when the vehicle is running low on DEF.
DEF can last up to 12 months in storage. It needs to be stored in dedicated DEF equipment and between a temperature of 12°F - 86°F. It also needs to be kept out of direct sunlight.
It is extremely easy to add DEF yourself, there is a fill port usually found under the hood next to the fuel port. Simply place the funnel into the entry point for diesel exhaust fluid and direct the liquid into your vehicle.
